1000 Silicon Valley Cats Euthanized Every Month

You'd think Silicon Valley residents are financially comfortable enough to be able to spay and neuter their cats, even when the cost is as ridiculously low as $5 for males and $10 for females but apparently not. According to the news story from the local CBS station, the San Jose animal "shelter" is forced to euthanize up to 1000 cats and kittens each month. That's outrageous!

The cause? Too many household cats that are not spayed or neutered creating too many kittens that are given up to the shelter and are not being adopted fast enough. There's a five-day waiting period until those kitties are then euthanized to make room for more. Terrible and shameful!

I know my veterinarian charges way more to spay and neuter, so those prices are very, very reasonable.
Those prices are only for residents of the cities that the San Jose Shelter covers, but non-residents can get their cats spayed or neutered for low prices, too, so there's no excuse. Other organizations around the Bay Area have low-cost spay and neuter programs that area residents can look into also.

My take: If you don't want to spay or neuter your cat, then keep it inside. They live longer that way, fixed or not fixed, and don't create more unwanted kittens. What a waste of a precious animal that can give lots of unconditional love and happiness.
